European significance: consists of the remains of a Roman settlement originally located at the mouth of the River Tiber on the west coast of Italy, originally built to protect the river mouth, later an active commercial centre, principal port of Rome, place of great strategic and commercial importance in the Mediterranean area, place where goods circulated and different cultures and religions mingled, melting pot and a place with far-reaching influence, gateway to Rome for goods and ideas
