European significance: purpose-built to serve as the headquarters of the European Commission of the Danube established in 1856 to regulate the navigation regime on the river system and which eventually developed into a more complex organisation that aimed to secure peace in a vulnerable European region at the intersection of interests between rival empires, construction was funded by eight European states, paragon of collaboration for the development of peaceful and prosperous Europa
