European significance: housed in a former Stalinist prison in Sighet, memorial to the victims of communist regimes and displays the development and effects of communist regimes in Romania and other countries of Eastern Europa, opened a new perspective on the history of five decades of communism and on the fight for freedom and democracy, stimulates mutual understanding of east and western Europa, managed to transform trauma into resilience with past suffering becoming part of the shared heritage
