The Beginning of the Conquest of Paradise (Dominican Republic)

Santo Domingo was founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496. It is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas and was the first seat of the Spanish colonial rule in the New World. The Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor is America's first cathedral and also the continent's first hospital and university are located in the city.

Today is Santo Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic and the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean. The Colonial City of Santo Domingo is since 1990 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
